Solaris SP21HB 21 inch cordless self propelled mower July 1, 2010 alvin texas I have a bad back and can't use a riding mower. Exhaust from a standard walk behind makes me sick. As a result I've been stuck with either paying a service to take care of my 1 1/3 acre or using a 15" corded electric. It took close to 5 hours for me to mow my property with the standard mower.
My wife found the Solaris cordless mower so we thought we'd give it a shot. Based on prior reviews we knew one set of battery's wouldn't get the job done so we purchased on spare set. We got the spare set of battery's before we got the mower so I had them charged and ready when the mower arrived. i couldn't be happier with its performance. It easily cuts through grass as tall as my gas powered mower will and its easier to push than my corded 15" mower, even without the self propelled option engaged. One set of battery's gets me through a little more than 1/3 of the yard so I decided to get a third set. Now I can do the entire yard, including trimming and blowing the trimmings off the paved areas, in less than 2 1/2 hours.
When my mower arrived, one of the battery's that was included was lying loose under the mower deck and seemed to have shorted out. It wouldn't take a charge. I called the warranty line and a new battery was shipped out the same day without question. I couldn't ask for better service.
I strongly recommend this product and wouldn't hesitate to buy again.

Great mower July 1, 2010 Mark E. Mort (Lawrence, KS) After reading over the reviews of this product, I purchased this mower in April. I have been very happy with it and am impressed with the quality mowing.
Some of the features that I have found most impressive:
1) It is easy to assemble
2) Easy to adjust the cutting height, but as noted in a few other reviews, the wheels are plastic and I wonder how they would hold up over time
3) The bagging option works well, although mostly I use it as a mulcher.
4) Self-propel is quite strong- I have several fairly steep grades and it has no problem with them
5) The battery holds its charge pretty well, better than I thought it would. My lawn is on the small side, but I can mow the whole thing using self-propel and it still has some battery power left.
6) Very easy to charge the batteries in the mower itself.
A few slightly negative comments
1) the external battery charger that came with mine never worked (but see # 6 above)
2) The contacts on the mower that clip around the battery are pretty weak and one of these on my mower periodically spreads and causes the battery to lose contact. Its easy enough to squeeze it tighter and reinsert battery, but it can be annoying.
All in all, I love this mower and waiting a few months to post a review to be sure my opinion didn't change. I would recommend this mower to friends without any reservation.
Sent it back ... June 21, 2010 Bob J. Auton (Boone, NC USA) Great idea! I think they did a very good job with the overall concept, but lost it with the choice of the deck. It is so weak, in fact, that the wheels seem to have trouble supporting it, and maneuvering it around caused the whole thing to flex enough to make me nervous. With the front wheel drive, I found myself fighting to keep it going in a straight line, and without "helping it along" (a lot!) it really wanted to dig down and chew up the lawn. While I really like the idea behind it, this one is simply too much more work to mow with than my old Honda.
It would probably be an excellent choice for a small, level patch of grass, but in order to use it for anything more demanding it really should have a deck that is far sturdier. As I said, I think the concept is great. I really hope they will continue to improve the design, and that the batteries will keep getting better and lighter.
lawnmower June 2, 2010 Jennifer A. Euclide I love this lawnmower! I have been using it for several weeks now. It is quiet, cuts very well. The battery charge will last me for about an hour of mowing. My lawn is slightly better than a farm field. It's uneven with dips and squirrel holes all over it and this mower handles it very well. I love the fact that it is self propelled. And living in an area that freezes hard every winter having removable batteries to bring indoors is a huge benefit. I like too that I can charge them either in the mower or oustide of the mower. I love that it mulches the grass so no piles or rows of mown grass to deal with. I don't find it to be heavy either. I would recommend it to anyone.
Comparison and FAQ... May 23, 2010 Y. R. Wu (Ann Arbor, Michigan) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've used three different cordless mowers and based on that experience I have to say I'm skeptical that 24 volts will work well with a 21" blade. I Have the 20" Toro with 36 volts which works very well and a 19"/24V B&D, which I found to be adequate 80% of the time - with only 24V it struggled with tall grass. The Greenworks 24v/18" self propelled mower may be a better bet.
I've put a quick guide of the most popular models on Amazon. All info reported by manufacturer. Amazon won't let me put prices in my review, sorry!

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. No fumes or exhaust- because gas mowers don't have catalytic converters, they can pollute as much in a year as 43 cars!!!!. They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is basically NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a cheaper but having a cord is a pain.
>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.
>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.
>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.
>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18" Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)
>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.
>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so it's cooler and the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted ~7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you might be able to kill the batteries in a year or two.
>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.
>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.
