Mower ok, handles break easily July 22, 2010 Gregory C. Steiner (USA) I previously owned a Black and Decker cordless electric mower, which worked well. When it came time to replace the battery again I had to decide if I wanted to spend the money for another battery or spend a little more for a new mower. I decided to get a new mower. This mower was $100 less than the B & D model so I bought it. I'm not convinced that I really saved much.
I've had this mower for 2 1/2 seasons now. I have no qualms with how it mows, it is adequate. However, I have gone through 3 mower handles. They break near the place where the flattened part attaches to the mower. A friend of mine was able to weld the pieces back on but one of them broke again, and not where the weld was done.
Other than that, the mower works as it should. It holds a charge well. I store it inside during our harsh Wisconsin winters to preserve the battery power. I don't expect it to go through tall grass. Mowing more often is better for the lawn anyway.
Great Mower June 22, 2010 Craig Youngman (Columbus, OH United States) I've had my mower now for a couple of years. I had a small Black & Decker before this one. It worked well, but was not nearly as powerful.
I read in a few reviews saying it no longer held a charge. Well after 2 years same thing happened to me. Batteries should last much longer than that, so I was disappointed. BUT, it was my fault. I assumed the charger was a trickle type and could be left plugged in all the time, not so. I took the top off the mower and I could visually see the batteries were bad. They were puffed out from overcharging. So I put new batteries in and it works great. Unfortunately it cost me $150 in batteries. The other thing I discovered is there is nothing to this mower. I mean this in a good way. My last mower had a electronic board inside. This with age went bad. The Earthwise has 2 batteries and the motor. That's it. No other electronics to make it go. This should mean very little to break down. Besides the on/off switch and the plug on the back to recharge, there is nothing to break.
So just plug it in, charge it up then unplug it. Or as I'm thinking of doing. Get a auto shutoff timer similar to this. http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Touch-C30001-Shut-Off-Setting/dp/B002KKCVYQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I31GWD24YWGW4W&colid=162XLD43BM6NQ
Then you can plug it in, set the timer for 8 hours and forget it.
All in all I'm very happy with my purchase.
Broken Wheel June 15, 2010 James J. Lord I like the mower but I am concerned abouts its durability. The third time I used it the wheel cracked. I have some steep hills on my property and I don't know if the mower will hold up. I just called Earthwise and got a very good response. They anwered promptly and said I had a two year warranty and can expect to get the wheel in 3-5 days
Don't buy this mower May 19, 2010 D. MACDONALD (Westlake TX) I have a St. Augustine lawn and mow it every week. Don't buy this mower. I bought one from Amazon 3/20/2009 and it died in May of 2010. The battery will no longer charge. The mower comes with a 2 year warranty but the battery only has a one year warranty. The battery is not removable so if you want to replace it you'll have to spend another $100 for the part then take the mower to a dealer (good luck finding one) to replace it. This mower is very heavy and is not self propelled. It is so heavy in fact, that the wheels leave tracks in the grass that spring back up after you mow so the grass looks uneven after you cut it. Also, the stone guard in the back is rubber and can get caught under the blades. If you pull backwards on the mower the guard will roll under the blades and get shredded. I know it sounds like an environmentally conscious purchase but if you take into account the fact that this cheaply built and designed product weighs over 100 pounds, probably gets shipped half way around the world and needs to be replaced yearly then it's carbon footprint easily exceeds that of my brand new gas powered Toro.
Discontinued - where to get parts?? May 16, 2010 David Ottalini (Silver Spring, Md. USA) I see the manufacturer has now discontinued this unit. After one season, I had to order new back wheels and a new "custom grip" for it because it rips. Wheels can't handle turns over time - they're made of plastic and the fins that are supposed to lend support tear and break over time. I was able to get parts from American Lawn Mower last year but it's website is broken these days. Wish I'd ordered more wheels! Otherwise, the unit works as advertised and handles a medium-sized front and back yard without a problem. Recharge takes a few hours but really not an issue. If anyone knows who is selling parts these days, please include them in the reviews.
